Okay... there are two degrees of separation between me and this story.

One of the victims is my friend's younger brother.

But unemotionally separating myself from the situation, I can totally see that there is something missing between "Left House" and "Returned with weapon." Something that happened that changed EVERYTHING. I really really want to know what it is, and I probably will never find out because the man is probably going to plead guilty, negating the need for a trial or much of an investigation.

Somewhere on the internet are people who are friends of the assailant who are confused from the other side who want an answer to the same question. I halfway wish we could find each other.

But I don't intend to make contact, even though I know where some of them are now, because my brother-in-law is in prison (albeit for a decidedly less violent crime) and I'm wondering how I would feel if his victim's older sister's friend contacted me looking for answers.

What I will do is say, if through some totally unlikely search pattern, you end up here on my LJ, let me know you're here, and we'll talk it over. He's guilty. He said so himself. But something else is going on here.

Wow - my sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families.

I cannot imagine, from the story, any reason any normal person would do what he did, no matter how angry, other than a psychotic break. Simply by definition, nobody normal bashes a sleeping person in the head with a hammer. There simply is no justification. So anyone who does that, by default, is insane.

Mentally ill (in either the medical or legal sense or perhaps both) is the way to categorize this.
